OKRVA - Statement Regarding Pressuring of Players

  • It is the intent of the Oklahoma Region to encourage players to tryout for as many clubs as they choose.
  • It is the Region’s intent that players not be pressured into a verbal commitment due to a coach/club establishing an unreasonable date/time for a decision.
  • A decision to join a team/club is an individual decision that should be made by a parent/player alone free from club pressure. Gathering players together after a tryout, stating “this is their team” and asking for commitments should be considered pressuring.
  • When a player receives an offer to commit, she/he needs to make a decision within a reasonable amount of time. Delaying a decision affects many other players who are also waiting for an offer to commit.
  • Players/Parents should understand that teams/clubs need to know a player’s decision in a timely manner in order to move on to the next player.
  • No player/parent should be asked to sign a contract before the region- approved signing dates. Contracts are not binding until the signing date.
  • If a player feels pressured into a decision before they have gone to other clubs’ tryouts, she/he should contact the Region Commissioner at okrva@cox.net.

What to expect after tryouts

We will begin our call backs as soon as tryouts are over for the age group. Everyone that’s been considered to be on a team will receive a call from one of our coaches.  If the offer isn’t accepted at that time, the coach may give you extra time to respond with in a reasonable timeframe.  We understand other tryouts can be a day or more after Kaizen tryouts, but also know that other’s that have been considered for that team is also waiting for the coaches call.

While we have heard of other programs pressuring athletes to accept their offers on the spot, Kaizen is philosophically opposed to such tactics.   We note that the OKRVA (Oklahoma Regional Volleyball Association) is also opposed to such tactics, and if an athlete feels pressured the OKRVA actively invites the athlete to notify the OKRVA so they may take steps to prevent such high pressure recruiting practices in the future.

Kaizen strives to offer every athlete whose schedule allows a spot on a team, as we do not believe in turning away players if at all possible.  That being said, if a player does not show the potential to be an active participant  - which would be the case if, for example, Kaizen was unable to offer a U18 development team for a beginning player who was unable to compete on the Regional or National level - Kaizen believes it would be doing the athlete a disservice by placing them on a team for which the athlete has not yet developed the requisite level of skill.

Frequently Asked Questions for Tryouts

Is preregistration required for tryouts? While it is preferred, it is not required. If you do not preregister through the website, allow yourself an additional 15-20 minutes before tryouts to fill out the registration form and get a tryout number assigned. Onsite registration will be taken on a first come/first served basis and your player will not be allowed to begin participation in tryouts until the paperwork is complete.  Additional registrations must be completed prior to this, so be sure to obtain your USAV-OKRVA membership number.

What to bring? Each player should bring proof of their OKRVA  registration to the tryout along with water for breaks. Each player will be given a tryout number to pin to their shirts. Appropriate court shoes and volleyball attire preferred.  Knee pads are optional.

Note: the link to the OKRVA page to obtain regional registration (which includes required liability insurance) insurance is at the top of the page..

What age division am I eligible for? USAV has standard age divisions (age definition above). Players may play up an age division if desired, but an older player cannot play down an age division under normal circumstances. There are waiver exceptions for first year players that can be used by a team to qualify older, inexperienced players in a younger age group, but they are only used in exceptional circumstances.

What happens if I don't make a team or miss tryouts? An athlete cannot join a team prior to tryouts.  This is intended to provide athletes with an equal opportunity to be selected for a team, and clubs with an equal opportunity to assemble a team.

Players can be added to teams after they are formed, just as new teams can be formed if there are enough players who join a club after tryouts.

Feel free to contact us after tryouts if you wish to participate in our program even if you did not attend our original tryouts.   If we do not have a spot for you, you can contact the Commissioner of the Oklahoma Regional Volleyball Association, Shawn McCarty, who may be able to help place you with another club.

KAIZEN TRYOUTS - PLAYER INSURANCE

Like all physical sports, playing volleyball involves the risk of injury - despite Kaizen striving to provide  a safe experience for coaches and athletes alike.

Kaizen does not provide any medical coverage, and strongly recommend that all participants in Kaizen sponsored activities be covered by a medical insurance policy.

Additionally, current USA Volleyball ("USAV") membership is required for all players  to participate in tryouts - in part because USAV membership includes liability coverage among its other benefits.  Players from last year should be covered until October 15th.  New players can start registering through the Oklahoma Regional Volleyball Association (the regional USAV affiliate covering Oklahoma) on  Sept 1.  The cost is typically about $55  for the year, which includes the required liability insurance.

Note that membership in USAV may provide limited medical insurance coverage for injuries suffered while practicing and playing volleyball at Kaizen sponsored events.  Consult USAV for details.

Please bring evidence of USAV membership number to the tryouts.

Joining USA Volleyball

Players join USAV  by joining the regional volleyball association covering the area in which they live.   If you have not already joined, click on the link below to join the Oklahoma Regional Volleyball Association ("OKRVA"). An OKVRA registration number is required to participate in any tournaments and practices hosted by Kaizen.
